My blogger friend Christopher in Australia posted two articles on ikebana that I'd like to share with you. The articles focuses on two elements that distinguish ikebana from Western flower arranging: The creation of space and the emphasis on asymmetry.
Both articles can be read online:
- 'A Comparison between Asymmetric Japanese Ikebana and Symmetric Western Flower Arrangement' by Marie Moriyama and Megumi Moriyama.
- '10 design lessons from the art of ikebana' by Garr Reynolds.

Thank you for sharing these two articles. They are very inspiring and a great reminder to us (Westerners) about the depth there is behind Ikebana. The lessons for design from Ikebana are so true and I can see I often forget the importance of space in my designs. Great reading and thinking!
Thanks for taking time to comment Cristina. I agree with you that it's easy to overlook the importance of space, both in ikebana and in our own lives. We need to allow ourselves time to take a second look to see that there is enough of it.
